Victor W. A. Mbarika, Ph.D
Prof. Victor W. Mbarika is Full Professor and Endowed Professor of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at East Carolina University, USA. Prof. Mbarika is also founder and President, Board of Trustees, of The ICT University System and Foundation (USA) of multiple campuses mainly based in developing countries. He is a philanthropist and has funded multiple ICT projects and scholarships worldwide. He is founder of the International Center for Information Technology and Development (ICITD). Prof. Mbarika serves (or has served) as Visiting Professor at the Univ. of Cape Town (South Africa), the Univ. of Buea (Cameroon), Makerere Univ. Business School (Uganda), Covenant Univ. (Nigeria), and Fulbright Visiting Professor at The Univ. of Technology Mara in Malaysia. Prof. Mbarika serves as external examiner at several Universities worldwide. He is an ICT consultant and holds a BSc in Management Information Systems (MIS) from the U.S. International University, MSc in MIS from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Ph.D. in MIS from Auburn University, USA. He completed his BSc, MSc and Ph.D. all in five years. Prof. Mbarika is recipient of two Lifetime Achievement Awards: (i) Lifetime Achievement Award from The African Society for Information and Communication Technology for his “Contribution to ICT Research and Education;” (ii) Lifetime Achievement Award from Cameroon Association of Engineers and Computer Scientists for "Outstanding contribution to computer science and telecommunications." He has authored over 175 academic publications in the form of books, peer reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings and book chapters. Every year, he serves as Keynote Speaker at multiple conferences worldwide. Much of his research is on ICT transfer in developing economies as well as in resource-poor settings of developed economies. He was cited as being “in the forefront of academic research into ICT implementation in Africa, and has provided a theoretically-informed framework for understanding ICTs in less developed countries…” His scholarly publications have appeared in journals such as Journal of the Association for Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, IEEE Transactions on Education, IEEE Transactions on IT in Biomedicine, IEEE Spectrum, Communications of the ACM, The Information Society, and Journal of the American Society for Information Sciences. His work has also appeared in major media outlets such as Reuters and The Associated Press (AP), including numerous radio and TV appearances such as the BBC. He has received multiple research and teaching grants, amounting to over $4 million, from the National Science Foundation, NASA, KPMG, Microsoft, the Louisiana Board of Regents, and several other private and public donors. Prof. Mbarika has received the prestigious U.S. State Department Fulbright grant four times to bring in scholars from developing nations to serve at his research center, ICITD. He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of The African Journal of Information Systems and senior board member for several academic journals internationally. Prof. Mbarika is a Lifetime Member of Beta Gama Sigma International Honor Society. He is member of the Association of Information Systems, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
